Civil War Minute
As you may know, the Civil War officially began in April 1861 with the surrender of Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Leading up to the war there had been several state sucessions over the issue of slavery and the former U.S. Senator from Mississippi, Jefferson Davis, had been elected Provisional President of the Confederate States of America in February 1861. In April, President Lincoln called for 75,000 militia to still the insurrection in South Carolina but by May, with war then inevitible, he called for 42,000 army volunteers and 18,000 seaman.

There are thousands of books on the Civil War. Please take time to read one today!
